Grapefruit, Strawberry, Ginger Smoothie

It’s officially cold and flu season and it bites. I got hit pretty hard with a cold and ended up leaving work a little early today to just go home and rest. My immune system isn’t the best, so my body takes things like these pretty rough.

When I do get sick, the last thing I want to do is go to the doctor. It’s not that I’m anti modern medicine — I definitely think there is a time and place for a doctor’s prescription. It’s just that I don’t think every time I get the sniffles, I need to run and beg for an antibiotic. It’s expensive and sometimes unnecessary. God gave us immune systems that are capable of fighting off a ton of things. While it can be helpful to get some reinforcement through a bottle of pills, I’d rather let my immune system do it’s job as often as possible. My immune system could use some help though, so I’ve been loading up on kombucha, herbal teas and vitamin C. Enter in this smoothie…

This smoothie has roughly 172mg of vitamin C. That’s a lot of immune support! Ginger is also a natural anti-inflammatory. I’ve been consuming a lot of ginger, since it makes my throat feel better. While drinking this smoothie isn’t going to miraculously cure whatever ailment you’re facing, it will give your body the extra push it needs to keep fighting back all of the bacteria and viruses floating around. Drinking something like this once a week or so would be a great idea.

Grapefruit, Strawberry, Ginger Smoothie

1 grapefruit, peeled and seeded
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 banana
1/2 cup dairy or non-dairy milk
1 tablespoon ginger, minced
Raw honey to taste — I used about 2 tablespoons

Toss it all in the blender and give it a whirl until smooth. Drink up!

It was great! Super tart and slightly bitter thanks to the grapefruit, but the banana, almond milk and honey definitely help mellow it out. If you make it, just taste it before you pour it, in case you want more of something.
